Chicago

3 Days in Chicago: My May Itinerary

Chicago was one of those trips where three days somehow felt like enough to get a real taste of the city without feeling like we spent the entire time running around.

We did the iconic stuff like Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile, Skydeck, and 360 Chicago, but food was definitely part of the itinerary too. I’m a big foodie, so there was no way I was going to Chicago and not make some of the meals an actual event.

And honestly, between the skyline views, parks, architecture, and food, Chicago gave us a really good mix for a quick city trip.

Trip Snapshot

  • Where: Chicago, Illinois

  • When we went: May

  • Length: 3 days

  • Trip style: City getaway + food + sightseeing

  • Best for: Food, architecture, skyline views, parks, museums, and walkable city exploring

  • Good to know: Chicago weather in May can switch up quickly, so layers are your friend

Day 1: Millennium Park + Grant Park + Magnificent Mile

Millennium Park

Start with one of the places everybody associates with Chicago.

Walk through Millennium Park, see Cloud Gate, aka “The Bean,” and spend some time actually exploring the area instead of just taking the picture and leaving.

This is also a good place to start because so much of downtown Chicago is easy to build around from here.

Grant Park

From Millennium Park, continue into Grant Park.

You are already right there, so I would treat the two parks as part of the same morning rather than separate destinations.

Take your time walking around and enjoying the skyline around you.

Magnificent Mile

Spend the afternoon around Magnificent Mile.

You have shopping, restaurants, architecture, and plenty happening around you, so it is an easy area to explore without needing a strict schedule.

360 Chicago

Finish the day at 360 Chicago.

This gives you your first real skyline moment of the trip from above.

If you can time it around sunset, even better.

💡 SHANE’S TIP

Since you are doing both 360 Chicago and Skydeck on this trip, do them at different times of day.

I would do one around sunset or at night and the other during daylight so they do not feel like the exact same experience twice.

Day 2: Batter & Berries + Lincoln Park + Skydeck

Brunch at Batter & Berries

Start the day at Batter & Berries.

I’m a foodie, so finding good places to eat is always going to be part of my itinerary, and this was one of our brunch stops.

Come hungry.

Lincoln Park Zoo

After brunch, head toward Lincoln Park Zoo.

One of the best things about this stop is that it gives you something completely different from downtown skyscrapers and shopping.

And the zoo itself is free, which is always a win.

Nature Boardwalk

Do not leave without walking around the Nature Boardwalk.

This was one of my favorite parts of the Lincoln Park area because you get greenery, water, and Chicago skyline views all in the same place.

It is an easy reminder that Chicago has a lot more going on than just downtown.

Skydeck Chicago

Later, head to Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower.

This is the one where you get The Ledge, the glass boxes extending out from the building.

If heights are not your thing, mentally prepare yourself lol.

But the views are worth it.

Dinner at Soul Vibez

Finish the day at Soul Vibez.

After a full day of walking and sightseeing, this is exactly when I want a good dinner rather than another attraction.

Day 3: Chicago River + Downtown Exploring + Slow Final Day

This is where I would add one experience if I were recreating the trip today.

Chicago Architecture River Cruise

If you have not done one before, I would add a Chicago architecture river cruise.

Chicago is known for its architecture, and seeing the city from the river gives you a completely different perspective than walking between the buildings.

This is one I would actually make room for rather than adding another random attraction just to fill the schedule.

Chicago Riverwalk

Afterward, spend some time along the Chicago Riverwalk.

Walk, grab something to eat or drink, and enjoy the city without having another major reservation hanging over you.

Explore Downtown One More Time

Use the rest of the afternoon for whatever you liked most.

Go back toward Millennium Park.

Shop.

Grab another meal.

Walk along the river.

The last few hours of a short city trip do not need to become another checklist.

If You Have Extra Time

If you have another half-day or want to swap something, I’d consider:

  • Art Institute of Chicago

  • Navy Pier

  • Museum of Science and Industry

  • Chicago Cultural Center

  • Lakefront Trail

  • Museum Campus

  • Chinatown

  • Wrigleyville

  • Another neighborhood food crawl

These are additions I’d consider rather than things I personally did on this trip.

What I’d Prioritize

If I only had three days again, these would stay:

  • Millennium Park

  • Grant Park

  • Magnificent Mile

  • Lincoln Park Zoo

  • Nature Boardwalk

  • Skydeck Chicago

  • 360 Chicago

  • Batter & Berries

  • Soul Vibez

And if I were improving the trip now, I would add the architecture river cruise.

💡 SHANE’S TIP

Chicago is one of those cities where you can rack up a lot of steps without realizing it.

Group downtown attractions together, wear shoes you can actually walk in, and leave some room in the schedule for food.

Because if I’m going to Chicago, eating well is absolutely part of the itinerary lol.

The Bottom Line

Three days in Chicago gave us a really good introduction to the city.

We had skyline views from two completely different observation decks, parks, shopping, Lincoln Park, plenty of walking, and some really good food in between.

For a quick city getaway, it felt like the right amount of time to see the classics without turning the entire trip into one long checklist.
