Know Before You Go: Amsterdam

The laws, local rules, safety tips, and cultural things I’d want to know before landing

Amsterdam has this reputation like anything goes.

It does not.

And because I personally tried space cake there, this is one where I would absolutely explain the difference between what people think the rules are and what the rules actually are.

Cannabis Is Tolerated, Not Fully Legal

This is probably the biggest misconception.

Cannabis possession and sale are technically illegal in the Netherlands, but small amounts are tolerated under specific rules.

Possession of up to 5 grams for personal use is generally not prosecuted, and licensed coffeeshops can sell cannabis under strict conditions.

That is very different from saying:

“weed is legal in Amsterdam”

It is more complicated than that.

Smoke Inside, Not Wherever You Want

Amsterdam specifically prohibits public cannabis smoking in parts of the city centre.

The city’s own guidance is basically:

If you want to smoke, do it inside a coffeeshop.

So no, walking through the Red Light District smoking a joint because “it’s Amsterdam” is not automatically okay.

Public Drinking Is Restricted Too

Amsterdam also restricts drinking alcohol in certain public areas of the city centre.

Again, this is one of those places where tourists sometimes mistake “relaxed culture” for “no rules.”

Do Not Buy Drugs From Street Dealers

Amsterdam explicitly warns visitors not to buy drugs from street dealers because substances may be fake, contaminated, or dangerous.

If you are going to participate in cannabis culture, stick to legitimate coffeeshops.

Coffeeshops Do Not Serve Alcohol

A real Dutch coffeeshop is a cannabis establishment, not a regular café with weed on the side.

They are not allowed to sell or serve alcohol.

Space Cake Can Sneak Up on You

Now speaking from personal experience...

I tried space cake.

And at one point I was seeing everything in 4K lol.

Edibles can take longer to hit than people expect.

Do not take more just because you “don’t feel anything yet.”

That is how you end up having a very long afternoon.

💡 SHANE’S TIP

Amsterdam is fun because it is open-minded.

That does not mean reckless.

Learn the rules, stay away from street dealers, and if you are trying something for the first time, maybe do not immediately double the dose because you got impatient.
