5 Days in Honolulu: My Oʻahu Itinerary
Honolulu had one of those trips where I knew I wanted beach time, but I also wanted to actually do something.
So yes, I relaxed.
But I also got inside a shark cage and went underwater in a submarine.
Very balanced lol.
We went in July and rented a car, which ended up being one of the best decisions because Oʻahu is the kind of place where you are constantly seeing something from the road and wanting to stop.
We did not have to wait on a tour schedule or convince a bus full of strangers that the lookout we just passed deserved ten minutes.
We could just go.

Day 1: Waikīkī + Ease Into the Trip
Waikīkī Beach
I would keep the first day simple.
After traveling to Hawaiʻi, I do not need my first afternoon to involve six reservations.
Spend some time around Waikīkī Beach, walk the area, grab food, and actually let yourself arrive.
Waikīkī is touristy, obviously, but it is still one of those places you should experience when you are staying in Honolulu.
Sunset
This is also a good night to catch your first sunset and keep dinner somewhere nearby.
No major excursion needed.
Day 2: Shark Cage Diving + North Shore
Shark Cage Diving
This was easily one of the most memorable things I did.
Getting into the ocean and seeing sharks swimming around you with basically just a cage separating you is one of those experiences that sounds slightly insane until you are actually doing it.
Then it becomes one of the stories you keep telling after the trip.
If you like experiences that make you a little nervous before you do them, I would absolutely keep this.
Explore the North Shore
Since many shark cage experiences operate from the North Shore, I would use the rental car and make more of the day instead of driving straight back to Waikīkī.
Spend some time exploring the area, stop for food, and let yourself pull over when something looks worth seeing.
The North Shore is one of the major experiences Oʻahu tourism highlights outside Honolulu, so it fits naturally with a shark-diving day.
Day 3: Diamond Head + Scenic Drive
Lēʻahi / Diamond Head
This is one I would add.
If you are already in Honolulu for five days, I think Diamond Head earns a spot.
You get a completely different perspective of Waikīkī and the coastline from the top, and it gives the trip something active without taking over an entire day. Hawaiʻi’s official tourism site specifically recommends reservations in advance for the hike.
Drive the Southeast Coast
Afterward, this is where having the rental car really pays off.
Instead of racing to another reservation, take the scenic route and make stops when something catches your attention.
That flexibility is part of the experience.
Day 4: Submarine Tour + Waikīkī
Submarine Tour
The submarine tour was another experience I would keep because, again, it is not just another beach day.
You actually get underwater without having to scuba dive.
It gives you a different look at the ocean and marine environment, and I liked having something completely different from the shark cage experience even though both were water-based.
Relax Afterward
This is a good day to leave the rest of the itinerary lighter.
You could:
Spend more time at the beach
Shop around Waikīkī
Grab drinks
Find somewhere good for dinner
Walk around without a destination
Not every day needs to be an expedition.
Day 5: Pearl Harbor or Cultural Day + Final Beach Time
For the last full day, I would choose based on what interests you most.
Option 1: Pearl Harbor
If you want something historical, Pearl Harbor is one of the major Oʻahu experiences and gives the trip a completely different layer from beaches and adventure activities.
Option 2: ʻIolani Palace + Downtown Honolulu
If you would rather stay closer to the city, ʻIolani Palace and downtown Honolulu give you more Hawaiian history and culture. Hawaiʻi’s official tourism itinerary specifically highlights ʻIolani Palace as the only official royal palace in the United States.
Then finish the trip with one last stretch of beach time.
What I’d Prioritize
If I had five days again, I would make sure these stay:
Shark cage diving
Submarine tour
North Shore
Waikīkī Beach
Diamond Head
One historical or cultural stop
The shark cage is the experience I would remember first though.
Because apparently getting into the ocean with sharks was something I needed to do on vacation.
The Bottom Line
Honolulu works best when you do not treat it like a trip where you just stay at the resort.
The beach is part of it.
But so are the drives, the water experiences, the views, and getting outside Waikīkī.
And having a rental car gave us the freedom to experience Oʻahu on our own time.
