Amsterdam

4 Days in Amsterdam: My Birthday Itinerary

Amsterdam was fun before I even left the city center, but one moment definitely made the trip unforgettable.

I tried space cake for the first time and, for a little while there, I swear I was seeing everything in 4K lol.

Outside of that, the trip had way more range than I expected. I did the canal cruise, museums, A’DAM Lookout, nightlife, and then got outside the city for Giethoorn and Zaanse Schans, which ended up being some of my favorite parts.

Four days in Amsterdam (went in May) gave me a little bit of everything: culture, views, day trips, nightlife, and one very memorable edible experience.

Day 1: A’DAM Lookout + Canal Cruise + Night Out

A’DAM Lookout

I’d start the trip with A’DAM Lookout.

My swing time was 12:20 PM, and this is one of those experiences I would absolutely keep because it gives you a great city view and something a little more memorable than just another observation deck.

The swing is the part that makes it.

You are literally hanging over the edge of the building with Amsterdam below you.

And my ticket came with two drinks, which made it feel more like an actual experience instead of a quick sightseeing stop.

Explore Around Amsterdam Central

After A’DAM Lookout, I’d keep the afternoon easy and spend some time around the central part of the city.

Walk the canals, grab food, and give yourself a little time to settle into Amsterdam instead of immediately packing the day.

Luxury Sightseeing Canal Tour

At 6:30 PM, I did a luxury sightseeing canal tour departing from Amsterdam Central Station.

This is one of the things I would definitely recommend doing early in the trip.

You get to see the city from the water, learn a little about what you are looking at, and get your bearings without doing much work.

My tour ran until around 7:30 PM.

Duivel Hip-Hop Bar

Later that night, head to Duivel.

This is one of those spots I would keep because it gives the itinerary some nightlife that actually feels specific instead of just saying “go out in Amsterdam.”

It is a hip-hop bar and stays open late, so it works well after dinner if you still have energy.

Day 2: Museums + Ice Bar

Rijksmuseum

Start the day with the Rijksmuseum.

If you are going to do one of Amsterdam’s major museums, this is one of the obvious choices.

Give yourself enough time to actually enjoy it instead of trying to sprint through the entire collection.

Van Gogh Museum

From there, work in the Van Gogh Museum.

Since both museums are in the same general area, it makes sense to pair them rather than bouncing back and forth across the city.

That gives you one strong museum day without taking over the entire trip.

Ice Bar

Later, switch gears completely and do the Amsterdam Ice Bar.

This is definitely more novelty experience than cultural must-do, but that is also why I think it works.

After spending part of the day in museums, doing something playful keeps the itinerary from feeling too serious.

Day 3: Giethoorn + Enclosing Dike

Giethoorn Day Trip

This is probably one of the most unique parts of the trip.

I’d dedicate the day to Giethoorn, sometimes called the “Dutch Venice.”

The village feels completely different from Amsterdam.

Instead of city streets and museums, you get canals, footbridges, traditional homes, and a much slower pace.

This is one of the experiences that makes a Netherlands trip feel bigger than just Amsterdam.

Enclosing Dike

The tour also included the Afsluitdijk, or Enclosing Dike.

That adds another element to the day because you get to see one of the major engineering landmarks in the Netherlands.

I would keep this as a full-day experience and avoid trying to squeeze anything major into the evening.

Day 4: Zaanse Schans + Flexible Amsterdam Time

Zaanse Schans

For the final day, I’d head to Zaanse Schans.

This is the classic Dutch windmill experience.

I took the train from Amsterdam Central in the late afternoon, which made it an easy trip outside the city.

The train ride itself was short, around 17 to 18 minutes, depending on the direction.

Once there, take your time walking around the windmills and historic buildings.

This is another one of those places where the setting itself is the experience.

Back to Amsterdam

After heading back into the city, keep the rest of the night flexible.

This is a good time to:

  • Walk the canals one last time

  • Grab dinner somewhere you liked

  • Revisit a neighborhood

  • Shop

  • Have drinks

  • Do anything you missed earlier in the trip

What I’d Prioritize

If I only had four days again, the experiences I would make sure stay are:

  • A’DAM Lookout + Swing

  • Luxury Canal Cruise

  • Giethoorn

  • Zaanse Schans

  • Rijksmuseum

  • Van Gogh Museum

  • Duivel Hip-Hop Bar

Those give you the best mix of views, culture, nightlife, classic Amsterdam, and experiences outside the city.

What About the Anne Frank House?

I would absolutely keep this on the list if tickets are available.

For my trip, tickets were sold out, so it did not happen.

That is actually a good reminder with Amsterdam:

If there is something you really want to do, especially the Anne Frank House, book it early.

The Bottom Line

Four days in Amsterdam gives you enough time to experience the city without making the whole trip about museums and canals.

Do the classics.

Take the canal cruise.

See the museums.

But also get outside the city.

Giethoorn and Zaanse Schans are the kinds of experiences that make the trip feel more complete.

And if you want something fun in between all the culture, ride the swing at A’DAM Lookout and go out somewhere that actually fits your vibe.
