New Orleans
4 Days in New Orleans: My Itinerary
New Orleans is one of those cities where the trip can feel completely different depending on what you lean into.
We went in September, rented a car, and that worked really well because some of the best experiences were outside the French Quarter. We could do the swamp stuff on our own schedule, make random stops, and still come back into the city for art, food, and the weird little things that make New Orleans feel like New Orleans.
And this trip definitely had a theme.
Alligators
Voodoo
Cemeteries
Ziplining through a swamp
Very normal vacation behavior lol.

Day 1: French Quarter + Haunted Voodoo Walk
Start the trip by getting into the atmosphere of the city.
Walk the French Quarter, grab food, take in the architecture, and let yourself wander a little before the evening.
Haunted Voodoo Walk
This is one of those experiences I’d absolutely keep.
New Orleans already has this layered history around folklore, religion, death, and the supernatural, so doing a haunted or voodoo walking tour at night just fits the city. Walking tours are one of the best ways to experience the French Quarter up close, especially when the guide is giving you the history behind what you are looking at.
I would do this after dark.
That is part of the experience.
Day 2: Swamp Tour + Ziplining
This is the day I’d build around the swamp.
Alligator + Swamp Tour
Do the classic swamp tour first.
Swamp tours are usually around 20 to 45 minutes outside downtown depending on the operator, and early fall is one of the better times for active alligator sightings.
This is one of those excursions that gives you a completely different side of Louisiana.
You go from city streets and old buildings to cypress trees, marsh, wildlife, and alligators.
Zipline Through the Swamp
Then level it up with ziplining.
Zip NOLA is one of the most distinctive add-ons because you are not just seeing the swamp from a boat, you are literally flying over it.
That is the kind of thing I’d remember long after the trip.
💡 SHANE’S TIP
If you are doing both the swamp tour and ziplining, make this the main day.
Do not book five other things afterward.
You will already have plenty going on.
Day 3: Art Galleries + Bywater / Marigny
This is the day I’d slow things down and give the trip some culture.
Visit the Galleries
New Orleans has a strong gallery scene, especially around the Arts District and Julia Street.
Arts District New Orleans is a good area to wander because you can pop in and out of galleries without turning the day into one giant museum visit.
If you want something more contemporary and culturally rooted, I’d add StudioBE.
It gives the trip something completely different from the swamp and supernatural stuff.
Wander Bywater or Marigny
Afterward, spend time in a neighborhood where you can just walk, eat, and take in the local feel.
This is one of those days where I would not overbook anything.
Day 4: Cemetery Tour + Final New Orleans Day
Cemetery Tour
This is another experience I would absolutely keep.
New Orleans cemeteries are visually and historically different because of the above-ground tombs and long-standing burial traditions. Guided tours help explain the people, architecture, and history behind them.
If you want the classic version, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 Official Tour is the one I’d look at.
I would do this earlier in the day before the heat and before the rest of the day gets away from you.
Final Afternoon + Dinner
Keep the last part of the trip flexible.
You could:
Go back to the French Quarter
Revisit a gallery
Shop
Grab beignets
Get one more good meal
Have drinks somewhere with live music
Walk around without trying to “complete” anything
September can still be hot and humid, and quick rain showers are common, so I would keep a little flexibility in the day.
What I’d Prioritize
If I only had four days again, I would make sure these stay:
Swamp tour
Swamp ziplining
Haunted voodoo walk
Cemetery tour
Art galleries
One slower neighborhood day
That gives the trip a really good mix of:
Nature
Adventure
History
Art
Folklore
Culture
Nightlife
The Bottom Line
New Orleans is one of those cities where the trip gets better when you stop trying to make it only about Bourbon Street.
Yes, do the French Quarter.
But also get out into the swamp.
Go through the cemeteries.
See the art.
Hear the stories.
Do something a little strange.
That is where the city starts to feel like itself.
