Cancun
4 Days in Cancún: My Itinerary
Cancún can easily turn into four straight days of resort, pool, beach, repeat.
And honestly, there is nothing wrong with that.
But I like having at least a few experiences that make the trip feel like more than just staying at the hotel.
We rented a car, which gave us way more flexibility to move around, stop when we wanted, and not build everything around tour pickup times.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, I ended up riding a camel in Mexico.
Was that on my original mental picture of Cancún?
Absolutely not lol.

Day 1: Beach + Jet Ski
Start With the Beach
I would keep the first day easy.
Get settled, spend time at the beach or pool, and actually enjoy the fact that you are in Cancún.
No need to immediately start running around.
Jet Ski
Later, do the jet ski.
This is one of those experiences that makes sense in Cancún because the water is part of the whole point of being there.
Keep it fun, keep it simple, and let that be the main activity for the day.
Day 2: Camel Riding + Relaxed Afternoon
Camel Riding
This was definitely one of the more random and memorable things I did.
Camel riding is not what most people immediately think of when they hear Cancún, which is exactly why I liked it.
It gave the trip one of those “wait, you did what?” moments.
I would build the day around that experience and keep the rest pretty relaxed.
Afternoon
Afterward, head back toward the hotel area, grab food, and give yourself some downtime.
Not every day needs three excursions stacked together.
Day 3: Isla Mujeres
This is one I would add.
Isla Mujeres is just a short ferry ride from Cancún and gives you a completely different pace. Official tourism guidance highlights Playa Norte, Punta Sur, and snorkeling as some of the main reasons to go.
Once you get there, you could:
Rent a golf cart
Visit Punta Sur
Spend time at Playa Norte
Grab lunch
Snorkel if you want
Just explore without rushing
I would give this most of the day.
Day 4: Cenote or Chichén Itzá
For the last full day, I would choose based on what kind of trip you want.
Option 1: Cenote Day
If you want something active but not exhausting, do a cenote.
Swimming in a cenote gives the trip something completely different from the beach and jet skis.
It also feels more connected to the region than just adding another resort activity.
Option 2: Chichén Itzá
If you want one major cultural day trip, do Chichén Itzá.
It is one of the most important Maya archaeological sites in the region, with El Castillo, the Great Ball Court, the Observatory, and other major structures.
It is a longer day from Cancún, so I would not pair it with a bunch of other plans.
What I’d Prioritize
If I only had four days again, I would make sure these stay:
Camel riding
Jet skiing
Isla Mujeres
One cenote or Chichén Itzá
Actual beach time
That gives the trip a really good balance of:
Adventure
Water
Relaxation
Something unexpected
Something cultural
💡 SHANE’S TIP
Do not overbook Cancún.
It is very easy to turn a beach vacation into a schedule you need a vacation from.
Pick the experiences you actually care about, leave room to relax, and let the car give you flexibility instead of making you feel like you need to be somewhere every hour.
The Bottom Line
Cancún is best when you let it be both things.
Yes, enjoy the resort and beach.
But also get out and do something.
Ride the jet ski.
Go to Isla Mujeres.
Swim in a cenote.
Apparently ride a camel lol.
That is what keeps the trip from feeling like every other beach vacation.
