Stockholm
3 Days in Stockholm: My Itinerary
Stockholm was much calmer than some of the other European cities I visited, and I actually loved that about it.
I spent part of the trip cruising through the archipelago, another part walking through the old city and watching the Changing of the Guard, and then somehow ended up inside a glass gondola looking over Stockholm from above.
It was only three days (went in May), but the trip never felt like I was just checking landmarks off a list.

Day 1: Archipelago Cruise + Gamla Stan
Archipelago Sightseeing Cruise
I’d start the trip with the Archipelago Sightseeing Cruise
Mine was at 10:30 AM, and I think this is one of the best introductions to Stockholm because the water is such a big part of the city’s identity.
You get to see Stockholm from a completely different perspective and start to understand just how connected the city is to the surrounding islands.
I would definitely keep this as one of the anchor experiences of the trip.
Gamla Stan
After the cruise, head to Gamla stan
This is Stockholm’s old town and one of those areas where I would not overplan.
Walk
Take pictures
Find somewhere for lunch or coffee
Explore the narrow streets
Look at the architecture
This is the kind of neighborhood where wandering is part of the experience.
Evening
I’d keep the first night easy.
Grab dinner somewhere around Gamla Stan or central Stockholm and let yourself settle into the city.
Day 2: Royal Palace + Changing of the Guard + Vasa Museum
Royal Palace
Start the day at The Royal Palace
This is one of the experiences I would absolutely keep from your original trip.
The palace is still an official royal residence and includes several museums and historic rooms open to visitors.
Take your time walking through instead of treating it like a quick photo stop.
Changing of the Guard
While you are there, work in the Changing of the Guard
This is one of those traditional experiences that gives the trip some personality beyond simply seeing another historic building.
The Royal Palace specifically highlights the parade and changing of the guard as part of the visitor experience.
I would check the current schedule before the trip because timing can vary.
Vasa Museum
Later, head to Vasa Museum
This is the one major Stockholm attraction I would add to your original list.
The museum is built around the Vasa, a 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was recovered more than 300 years later. More than 98% of the ship is original.
That is what makes this one feel different.
You are not just walking through another history museum.
You are standing in front of an actual preserved ship from the 1600s.
For a short Stockholm trip, I think this earns the time.
Day 3: SkyView + Final Stockholm Views
SkyView Glass Gondola
Start the final day at Skyview
The glass gondola takes you up the exterior of the Avicii Arena and gives you a completely different city view from what you get on the water.
I like keeping this because it balances the trip.
You already saw Stockholm:
From the water
From street level
Through the old city
Through its royal history
Now you get to see it from above.
Explore Södermalm
After SkyView, I’d add some time in Södermalm.
This gives you a more modern, neighborhood-focused side of Stockholm before you leave.
You can walk around, shop, grab lunch, or just take your time exploring.
If you want one more good viewpoint, Stockholm Tourism specifically recommends Monteliusvägen and Fjällgatan for panoramic city views.
Fotografiska
If you still have time and want one more cultural stop, I’d consider Fotografiska Museum Stockholm
It gives the trip something more contemporary after all the royal history and old architecture.
I would treat this as optional though.
Three days goes quickly, and I would rather enjoy Stockholm than squeeze in one more museum just to say I did it.
What I’d Prioritize
If I only had three days again, the experiences I would make sure stay are:
Archipelago Sightseeing Cruise
Gamla Stan
Royal Palace
Changing of the Guard
Vasa Museum
SkyView Glass Gondola
That gives you a really good mix of:
Water
History
Architecture
Swedish culture
City views
Neighborhood exploration
The Bottom Line
Three days in Stockholm is enough to get a really good feel for the city if you do not try to see everything.
Take the archipelago cruise
Walk through Gamla Stan
See the Royal Palace and Changing of the Guard
Go see the Vasa
And finish with a completely different view of the city from SkyView
It gives you a trip that feels varied without feeling rushed.
